Kilimanjaro Fabric

An East African kitenge is a rectangle of pure cotton cloth with a border all around it and printed in bold designs and bright colors. Women use kitenges to cover other clothes and to carry their young children on their backs. Many of the fabric pieces contain printed African sayings – some meant to insinuate a disagreement with another woman, or just bring a traditional fable to the community’s attention.

This colorful fabric is soft, vivid with striking colors and has patterns that are unlike textiles you’d find anywhere in Western culture.
